What Is Padel? Rules, Kit and Where to Play in the UK

Padel is a racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, and it is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. This guide covers the basics so you can step onto court confidently.

The basics

Padel is almost always played as doubles on a court about a third the size of a tennis court. The court is enclosed by glass walls and mesh fencing, and the ball can be played off the walls after it has bounced, which keeps rallies long and fun.

How scoring works

Scoring follows the same pattern as tennis: 15, 30, 40 and game, with sets decided by games won. Matches are typically best of three sets.

The serve

The serve is underarm. You let the ball bounce, then hit it at or below waist height diagonally into the opposite service box.

What you need to start

  • A padel racket (many clubs let you rent or borrow one for your first sessions).
  • Padel balls, which are slightly smaller and less pressurised than tennis balls.
  • Court shoes with good grip, ideally made for padel or similar court sports.
  • Comfortable sports clothing.

Where to play in the UK

Padel courts are appearing at tennis clubs, leisure centres and dedicated venues across the country. Search for courts near you, book a beginner session or a coached introduction, and you will be playing within minutes.

First-session tips

  • Do not try to hit hard. Control and placement win points.
  • Learn to let the ball come off the back wall rather than rushing it.
  • Communicate with your partner and move together as a pair.
