Padel is played on artificial turf, often filled with sand, and involves quick changes of direction. The right shoe protects your joints and keeps you stable.
Why not just wear tennis shoes?
Tennis shoes are built for different surfaces. Many padel shoes have an outsole pattern designed for grip on sanded artificial turf and a supportive upper for lateral movement. If you are only trying padel once or twice, clean court trainers are usually fine.
What to look for
- Outsole pattern: herringbone or similar patterns grip well on sanded turf.
- Cushioning: helps absorb impact from bounding and landing.
- Lateral support: a stable upper helps with side-to-side movement.
- Fit: a snug heel and enough room at the toes. Try on with your usual sports socks.
Indoor vs outdoor
Outdoor courts and heavily used surfaces can wear shoes faster. If you play a lot outdoors, look for durable outsoles.
