Padel looks complicated at first, but the rules are simple once you have seen a few points played. Here is a plain-English summary of the essentials.
Format
Padel is usually played as doubles on an enclosed court, with two players on each side of the net.
Scoring
Points run 15, 30, 40 and game, as in tennis. At 40-40 many clubs play a golden point to decide the game, though some use traditional advantage scoring. Check which applies where you play.
Serving
The server lets the ball bounce once and strikes it at or below waist height, aiming diagonally into the opposite service box. A serve that hits the net or lands outside the box is a fault, and you get a second serve.
Using the walls
After the ball has bounced on your side of the net, you can let it rebound off the walls and still return it. A ball that hits the wall or fence on the opponents’ side before bouncing on the floor is out. You may not play the ball after it has bounced twice.
Common mistakes
- Serving above waist height.
- Letting the ball bounce twice before you hit it.
- Touching the net with your racket or body.
Rules can vary slightly by competition, so check with your venue or the governing body if you are entering a tournament.
